CONDITIONS & TREATMENTS

ACHILLES TENDINOPATHY / RUPTURE

Achilles tendinopathy is a condition that causes pain, swelling and stiffness to the Achilles Tendon, which is the tendon that connects your heel bone to your calf muscles.

Achilles Tendinopathy Rupture Treatment

CAUSES

Trauma to the Achilles Tendon can cause a complete rupture
Repeated small injuries to the Achilles Tendon

SYMPTOMS

Mild pain in the back of the leg or above the heel bone
Tenderness or stiffness in the morning
Swelling
Difficulty flexing your foot or pointing your toes

TREATMENT

Achilles Tendinopathy is conservatively treated with physical therapy and a CAM walker to promote stability in the ankle and foot and to restrict motion and weight bearing activities. In the event of a full rupture of the Achilles Tendon, surgical repair is required. In such instances, the surgeon would suture together the ends of the ruptured Achilles Tendon and any adjunctive procedures that are necessary.
